4 Things to Consider When Selecting Your Wedding Party

tips for picking your wedding party

You’ve just gotten engaged and FaceTimed all of your family members and friends to share the good news. Now what? Well, now you get to start planning a wedding.

There are some pretty simple initial steps to planning a wedding, some starting just hours after the engagement news. You’ll have to narrow down a guest list, figure out when you’d like to get married, and nail down a venue. All that happens pretty quickly, but another question you have to answer in the first few weeks/months of planning is: who is going to be in your wedding party?

Well, ultimately, that answer is up to you, but we’re here to help you with some tips and advice on going about choosing your wedding party.

Don’t Rush the Decision

It may be tempting to jump on the phone and “pop the wedding party question” right after your engagement, but once you ask the question, it’s very awkward to rescind it. So, think twice -- or three times -- before you ask someone to stand next to you while you get married.

Plus, giving yourself a few weeks, a month, or more to make the decision will help clear up how many people you want in the wedding party and the roles they’ll play.

Do Include Family

Have brothers and sisters? Yes, you should totally ask them to stand by your side. Family is for life, and while familial relationships may ebb and flow throughout the years, they’re generally pretty constant. Don’t regret not asking your sibling, who may turn out to be your best friend 10 years down the road.

Also, it’s a cool feeling to stand next to your brother or sister on one of the most important days of their lives, so it’ll go a long way in enhancing that relationship.

Don’t Feel Obligated

Yes, you may have been super jazzed to be in your friend’s wedding and may feel a little pressure to ask them purely because of that, but we’re here to say you don’t have to. Much like you’re allowed to tell people that their input in planning your wedding is appreciated, but not needed, you can curate your own wedding party list based on your wants.

We know this is a hard task, telling people no, but at the end of the day, if you’re honest and upfront, people will likely understand.

Do Your Own Thing

This is the most important tip we can give you. Seriously, it’s your wedding and you can do what you want with it. Want 43 people in your wedding party? Sounds hectic, but go for it! Only want siblings and to give everyone else an “honorable mention?” Do it!

It can’t be understated that your wedding is fun for everyone, but it’s your day, so it should make you happy from planning to vows.
